UIA COVID-19 Information Hub
  • UIA Member Sections & Working Bodies all over the world are providing constructive and innovative guidance to architects working to serve their communities and keep their businesses afloat in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Architects play a key role in countering this pandemic, from improvising emergency healthcare facilities and producing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to developing projects on the front line. In the aftermath of the current crisis, the confinement measures taken by governments raise important questions about spatial and urban configurations, questions to which architects can respond.

The UIA launched a COVID-19 Information Hub, compiling information, recommendations and initiatives from our Member Sections across the UIA’s five world regions. The Hub will ultimately be developed into a research repository for architects on impacts, mitigation measures and future planning implications, with perspectives from the UIA’s working bodies.

UIA Sustainable Development Goals Dhaka Declaration
  • Over the last few decades, tremendous progress has been made in improving the health, education, and well-being of people around the world. However, this development has been accompanied by environmental damage, climate change, and resource depletion as well as social and cultural challenges. In 2015, the nations of the world came together and laid out the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals to be achieved by 2030.

Architecture interacts with each of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and architects can help the goals to be achieved. As architects, we have the responsibility to contribute to the built environment and make choices that change the world for the better—through better buildings, settlements, landscape architecture and urban planning.

The UIA, UIA SDG Commission, ARCASIA and the Institute of Architects Bangladesh signed the UIA SDG Dhaka Declaration on 13 April 2019, calling on architects to strive for these Goals in their own practice and as civic leaders.

2019 World Architecture Day International Poster Design Competition

  • On Monday, 7 October 2019, people everywhere will celebrate World Architecture Day 2019. It is traditionally celebrated every year on the first Monday in October to coincide with the United Nations World Habitat Day.

The UIA has chosen the theme “Architecture… housing for all”. It will focus on how architects can contribute to the realisation of affordable housing for all; the implementation of the New Urban Agenda; and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 11, “to make cities and human settlements safe, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable”.

The International Union of Architects (UIA)—the only global organisation representing the world’s 3.2 million architects—is now launching a competition to design the poster for World Architecture Day 2019. UIA Student Competition for a Prefabricated Modular Community Health Centre

12 December 2017

UIA Student Competition for a Prefabricated Modular Community Health Centre

The UIA is proud to announce that its own Work Programme, the Public Health Group, has launched an exciting student competition for the design of a prefabricated modular community health centre. The open international ideas competition is part of the programme for the 38th International Seminar of the Public Health Group, to be held in Paris from 29 to 31 May 2018 in conjunction with Paris Healthcare Week.

The competition asks participants to design a Community Health Centre (CHC), to be found in communities with reduced access to healthcare facilities, such as smaller cities in underdeveloped countries or remote, rural areas of developed countries. The designs should imperatively make use of prefabricated modular units, easily transportable by road, rail or boat. They should be amenable to incremental expansion until the facility "grows to a fully-fledged CHC."

While the jury will be evaluating entries on the basis of environmental quality, the most important consideration will be good design. The jury will be looking for projects which demonstrate "a convincing, aesthetically appealing building design."

The competition is conducted according to the UIA Competitions Guide and the UNESCO Regulations for International Architecture Competitions.

ELIGIBILITY
Students of architecture (Bachelor's, Master's or Doctorate at an accredited institution) interested in and possessing a broad understanding of healthcare environments are encouraged to participate in multidisciplinary groups led by a student of architecture. Each team should include three students maximum.

No entry fees, but copy of ID and student card required.

For more information, check out, www.uia-phg.com or UIA website.
